A Scanner Darkly
This film came out in 2006, but I only recently viewed it. It is based upon a story by Philip K. Dick, and it is a Richard Linklater film, rotoscoped, as was Waking Life. The plot is not terribly involved, but the treatment is appropriate. Undercover agents wear a suit while they are at the police station which makes them appear to change appearance constantly, something that would be difficult and expensive to reproduce with special effects. At times people turn into unpleasant insects, which is believable in a rotoscoped film.
It has a relatively hopeful ending, but it is a dark film in general. An undercover cop becomes addicted to "D" or "Death" capsules and loses sight of his own identity.
