Her Second Death

This memoir is compelling and vivid. The author was born in 1965 and her mother is the main focus of the book; there is a clear ambivalence and confusion in the stories. Her mother did lots of coke, and was sexually involved with many men, was abusive, yet affectionate, took care of her children, yet did not provide them with good structure.

It is a memoir of recovery, in a sense; recovery from Susanna's intimate relationship with this dysfunctional and obsessive parent.
